How the VA pays for home health through Community Care.

The VA can bring skilled care into a veteran’s home by authorizing a community provider. It is not automatic — the VA decides, case by case — but the rules are knowable and the first step is a conversation with your VA care team.

When Community Care applies.

  • You are enrolled in VA health care (or eligible to enroll).
  • The VA cannot readily provide the service you need at a VA facility.
  • Distance or wait times exceed the VA’s access standards, or you and your VA provider agree community care is in your best interest.

What to ask your VA care team.

  1. Whether you qualify for Community Care for home health.
  2. For a referral and authorization for skilled care at home.
  3. Your authorization number and which services and frequency it covers.
